Welcome to Mystic, an NU Math GNU/Linux server
This is an experimental machine. If you encounter problems, please
e-mail sbratus "at" ccs.neu.edu .
Our resources:
If you are a novice UNIX user, take a look at the
UNIXhelp for Users,
a clear and concise intro to the system.
This machine was previously called Miskatonic (in honor of H.P. Lovecraft's
Miskatonic University, Arkham, MA, one of the oldest and most mysterious
universities of New England).
Go here if you are a faculty member, visitor
or grad student at the Math Department of Northeastern University
and would like to get an account.
The list of programs available so far is here.
You will find a welcoming note and some useful UNIX tips
here.
So far, all accounts on this machine are given "as is", without
support (this may change, however). You will have to create your
own preferences and configuration files.
This is an experimental machine. Its uses include (but are not limited to)
- Giving interested faculty and graduate students real UNIX accounts, with
development software such as GNU C & C++ compilers, Perl and Lisp,
or just for e-mail, TeX, and experimenting with UNIX. Quotas on disk space
will be rather strict, though.
- Running an alternative Web server, for interactive homepages
with CGI scripts (which are much easier to write under UNIX),
or as an ftp server for your papers and class materials.
- Special projects of interest, e.g. running symbolic computation
packages such as GAP, Macaulay (already on the system) or Lie and
statistics packages.
Please bear in mind that we do not have the same safety guarantees
as large UNIX systems, and may suffer system and hardware breakdowns,
and even hacker intrusions! Unless you have made backup arrangements,
do not store your most important work on this computer.
Have fun with Linux!
