Shubin
named Matthews distinguished professor By Susan Maddocks (June 8, 2001) — Mathematics professor Mikhail Shubin, considered one of the world’s leading experts in the vast area of partial differential equations, has been named Northeastern’s newest Matthews distinguished professor. “Professor Shubin is a distinguished, internationally
recognized scholar and committed educator who has generously shared his
experience with the Northeastern community,” provost David Hall
said.Matthews professors, named for trustee chairman emeritus George Matthews and his wife, Kathleen Waters Matthews, receive two-year release from teaching duties and $10,000 to fund their research. Appointees carry the Matthews designation for the remainder of their tenure at Northeastern. Shubin said he will use the release time to complete a book he is writing on von Neumann algebras and their applications, and a textbook on partial differential equations. Von Neumann helped develop the atom bomb and build the first computer. "Von Neumann was one of the greatest mathematicians of all times," Shubin said. "I always admired his work." Shubin, a noted teacher and scholar for more than three decades, came to Northeastern in 1992 after teaching one year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has also held teaching posts at Institute of New Technologies in Moscow, Russia, and at Moscow State University, where he earned his master's and doctorate in mathematics. Shubin also holds a doctor of science in physics and mathematics from the Leningrad branch of Steklov Mathematical Institute of Academy of Sciences in the former USSR. Shubin, whose research has led to the development of several key concepts and fundamental breakthroughs, such as the Shubin trace formula and the Novikov-Shubin invariants, oversees the Basic Notions Seminar for faculty and graduate students in Northeastern's mathematics and physics departments. He was also instrumental in advancing the mathematics graduate program to its current level. Shubin is a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, serves on the editorial boards of three international mathematics and physics journals and serves on the board of editors for the Research Monograph and Lecture Notes series of World Scientific Publishers. In addition, the National Science Foundation continuously funds his research. |
